NL #09, December 1993

This issue provides details of the 1994 Annual Meeting, to be held at Plimouth Plantation near Plymouth, Massachusetts. There are several Genealogical Queries seeking information on the parents of Elizabeth White Ripley, who married Isaac DELANO Jr. in Duxbury on 26 August 1781; on Sara Cole, who married John DELANO in Duxbury on 2 July 1718; and on the families of Spencer ARNOLD and Ambrose ARNOLD, ca 1794-1861 of Palermo, ME. Included is news on the climbing of DELANO PEAK in Utah (elev. 12,173) on 26 September by George D. Gerpheide and his sister, Joan G. Colgren and their families. In Muriel's Corner, she presents the start of a series on how to get started tracing your ancestors. An article on questionable genealogical organizations is reprinted from the Virginia Beach "Genealogical Society Newsletter" warning against groups that claim to have compiled a book filled with information about your surname and its history. It's probably bogus and a scam; directions are provided for reporting these scams. Articles on Canadian DELANOs, European places with DELANO-DE LANNOY connections, and a wonderful sketch by Julia DELANO Curtis of Jonathan DELANO 4th's powder horn that he had with him at Valley Forge in 1777 are included in this issue. Known as the "Roxbury Horn", this powder horn is described on page 329 of the GHAAHD. Two homes with DELANO connections are presented. The Rich-Twinn House in Akron, New York, is an unusual octagonal-shaped house once owned by Charles B. Rich, who was Hannah Elizabeth DELANO's second husband (GHAAHD, page 445). The second house belonged to John DELANO Jr. and is located in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Built of granite said to have been quarried on Jabez DELANO's original property, "Greystone Manor" was built around 1850. A reproduction of the Delano de Lannoy coat-of-arms from the GHAAHD, some pointers on protecting family papers, and a DE LANNOY word puzzle complete this issue.
