NL #50, October-November 2005

This issue of Bonnes Nouvelles announced the plans for the 2006 Annual Reunion, to be held in Burlington, Vermont, on June 23 to June 25. Congratulations were extended to Cousin Ed Sullivan for his election as Governor General of the Mayflower Society and to Cousin Muriel Cushing for the Mayflower Certificate of Commendation and Appreciation for her work in the compilation of Philip Delano of the "Fortune" 1621, the first four generations and Volume I of the fifth and sixth generations. Presented in this issue is a wonderful discussion of "Some Delano Answers," part two of a two-part series of TAG articles (The American Genealogist) by Kerry William Bate. Part one, "Some Delano Questions," was published in 1976 and discussed in Bonnes Nouvelles #49. These articles focus on Philippe and his family before he sailed to America and address a number of errors and inconsistencies in the GHAAHD. There is a wealth of good information in this article. Genealogist Mary T. Palladino of Oxnard, CA, has supplied information on the family of Joseph Henry De Lano (GHAAHD, bottom of page 528), who is part of the GHAAHD's "Unknown Branches." Also in this issue is a very informative article by Cousin George English on "Researching Your British?Ancestors." Cousin George presents information about a number of web sites of interest to genealogical researchers in the categories of

  • General Family History,
  • Births, Marriages and Deaths,
  • Census (England/Wales),
  • Other, and
  • Scotland and Ireland.

An article by Cousin Muriel Cushing describes the life of Annie Edson Taylor who, on October 24, 1901 (her 63rd birthday), became the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel! A View of New Plymouth showing Leyden Street in 1638 by Dutch painter Adam Willaerts is compared to a photograph of Leyden Street as it appeared in June of 2005. The Historic Staunton Hill Plantation in Campbell County, Virginia, is being offered for sale according to an article sent in by Cousin Frances Mitchell. Sitting on about 270 acres of the original 600, the 1848 main house was completely overhauled in the 1930s under the direction of architect William Adams Delano.
